History isn't just about memorizing dates. It's about understanding people, choices, and consequences. In this course, students don't just read about history—they step inside it.
Using Large Language Models (LLMs) as a creative partner, students research a specific period in Canadian history and develop a historical fiction narrative. They must ensure their characters' lives, challenges, and environments are historically accurate, requiring deep engagement with primary and secondary sources.
Historical Thinking Concepts
The course is structured around the "Big Six" historical thinking concepts:
- Historical Significance
- Evidence
- Continuity and Change
- Cause and Consequence
- Historical Perspective
- The Ethical Dimension
By applying these concepts to their story, students learn to think like historians. They analyze *why* events happened, whose voices are missing, and how the past shapes the present.
From Research to Narrative
Each module focuses on a different era, from WWI to the present day. Students:
- Learn to trust their ability to navigate the modern media landscap
- Use a wide variety of sources that reflect their interests
- Draft narrative chapters that reflect their findings
- Critique and refine their work with teacher feedback
The final project is a complete novella that demonstrates not just creative writing skill, but a rigorous understanding of Canadian history.
